Unearthed – My Equilibrium presents Jing Fu’s atmospheric landscapes in conversation with her ongoing explorations in abstraction. Informed by her training in shan shui (literally translated as ‘mountains and water’ paintings), the works on display balance Eastern aesthetics with local influences. Since immigrating to Canada from urban Shanghai more than twenty years ago, Fu’s close observations of southern Ontario’s natural environments have become central to her practice. A frequent hiker and prolific painter, she expertly translates her meditations on the natural world onto canvas.
If Fu’s landscapes evoke the opposing yet harmonious forces of nature on a grand scale, her Roots series turns inward, offering a more intimate exploration of nature’s symbolism and symmetry. Through bold brushstrokes and richly layered textures, she conveys the strength of the gnarled tree roots, while the finely rendered details reveal the delicacy of the intricate root networks beneath our feet. Together, these two bodies of work reflect her pursuit of both internal and artistic balance as she moves fluidly between Eastern and Western visual languages.

Opening Night | Thursday May 14, from 6:30 – 8:30pm: All are welcome to celebrate the opening of Unearthed: My Equilibrium. Light refreshments provided with remarks at 7pm. All are welcome.
Closing Talk | Wednesday, August 12 at 7:00pm: Sit in on a live discussion on between Jing Fu and Ashlyn Gregory, Gallery Manager, surrounding the concepts within her explorative artistic practice and her signature solo exhibition. All ages and no admission fee; however, a free RSVP is required (click to RSVP). Cash donations are welcomed at the door.
Crit Club | Saturday, May 23, 9:00 – 11:00am: Crit Club offers a free space for artists to gather and engage in thoughtful dialogue surrounding their own and each other’s work
Spring Artist-Poet Gathering | Saturday, May 23, 11:00am – 1:00pm | FREE: A quarterly meetup for artists and poets to create spontaneous written and visual responses to the artworks on display within our current exhibitions.
Gallery Yoga and Sound Bath | Sunday, July 26 10:00 – 11:00am | $25.00+HST: Join Dayna Wylder in the gallery for a one-hour group yoga and sound bath session, surrounded by the breath-taking paintings by Jing Fu. Attendees must bring their own yoga mat and water bottle. Click here to RSVP.
About the Artist
Jing Fu (b. 1972) grew up in the urban environment of Shanghai, China, with limited access to nature. This restriction deepened her longing for the natural world, which she sees as ‘a symbol of freedom and escape from stress”. In 1998, Fu immigrated to Toronto, and then 10 years ago to Newmarket where she was inspired by its beautiful trails and landscapes. Fu captures the beauty of nature, inspiring appreciation and environmental awareness. She is continually exploring new techniques to strengthen her connection with nature and her audience, advocating for a shared responsibility to protect the planet.
