The Aurora Cultural Centre presents Portraits of Song, a pop-up exhibition of works commissioned, collected and curated by contemporary folk duo Champagne Weather – who will be performing live in Aurora Town Square on April 11 at 7:30 pm.
Can a piece of visual art capture a song?
Champagne Weather strives to create lasting relics of music – something beyond recordings or sheet music. Their live, improved sounds are like diving headfirst into a pool; their listeners are transported to a space of heightened perception, reflection, and creativity. The noise of the outside world is drowned out and the experience of here and now takes over.
Realizing their performance style uses many of the same principles as visual artists by exploring texture, colour, composition, balance, and form, the duo decided to expand their practice further in the visual field. Canadian female visual artists were invited to their live performances, and over the course of four shows, were provided the instruction to simply ‘embody the music’ in real time. In response, the artists unleashed their creativity, forming a final collection of works; 11 pieces by 7 artists, each capturing the ephemeral nature and individualistic perception of each performance. Together, this forms the exhibition seen in the hallway before you – Portraits of Song.
