Photography is a simple way to capture the beauty of the world around you. In this one-day “out-of lockdown” workshop you will learn the basics of reading light, framing, using rule of thirds and other techniques to achieve striking images. Students will photograph elements of nature outside, and then return back inside to review their images with classmates. Indoor photography projects are an option dependent on weather. This class is intended for both DSLR and smartphone users and can be tailored to your personal interests and aims.  Prerequisite checklist available for download above.

Meet Your Instructor

Instructor Steve Somerville launched his photography career working for Western University’s school newspaper, The Gazette.  He has photographed Premier League soccer, rugby, cricket, the NFL, Wimbledon and other events with Colorsport Photographic Agency and is a current and long-time Metroland – York Region photojournalist.  Steve has also freelanced in a range of topics, including photographing stock images of nature and wildlife with many large organizations, namely the Toronto Sun among other publications. In the late 1990s, Radisson Hotels and Resorts hired Steve for his keen eye to continue an ad campaign started by renowned photographer Elliot Erwitt, photographing hotel employees interacting with guests. His images ran in many major publications, including the New York Times, USA Today, BusinessWeek and Forbes. Steve has been teaching with the Centre for over 5 years.
