Getting to hear the stories behind the art has always been one of the best parts of the Mayor’s Celebration of Youth Arts program. Please enjoy listening to student artists Hannah and Gracie as they share with us about their artwork from the 2021 MCOYA show.

Discover how Hannah’s personal experiences with mental illness moved her to create her intense and emotional “Madness” painting and the role that her experiences and reflections has in her art. One of the issues facing those with mental illness is how the issue is seldom spoken about and so Hannah’s dramatic work hopes to inspire connection for those who are struggling to know these kinds of feelings are more common than they think.

Get clues into the meaning behind Gracie’s enigmatic “The Conclusion” tryptic painting as she explains how the television show The 100 and movies like Mad Max inspired this apocalyptic artwork. Listen as Gracie describes her intention to have the three individual narrative and visual elements come together to create a holistic story.
