Art Bytes | In Conversation with John Pryce and Shelly Burke

Thursday, September 3 | 2 pm

Join Carmel Brennan and Clare Bolton in a lively conversation with artists out west. John Pryce and Shelly Burke join us from British Columbia to discuss painting the Ontario landscape and reminiscing on their experience as former members of the Uxbridge Artist Collective. Engage with Clare Bolton, Gallery Manager, in the Facebook comments from 2pm-3pm.

John Pryce

John Pryce’s love for art began at a very early age, as he discovered the great satisfaction derived from his ability to draw and paint. He continued developing his artistic interests and eventually became an art major at the highly acclaimed H.B. Beal Tech. in London, Ontario. Since that time Pryce has worked and studied in Montreal, Chicago and Toronto. During a successful first career as an architectural illustrator, Pryce’s work was used in projects around the world. His seemingly loose yet eloquent technique is the result of years of experience in the disciplines of drawing, colour and composition. John currently divides his time between painting and sharing his artistic knowledge with others through his workshops. “The purest and most rewarding form of painting, in my opinion, is “en plein air” as it challenges all of the skills and discipline of the artist.”

Shelly Burke

Since her graduation from Ottawa University in Fine Arts and Art History, Shelly Burke has pursued painting and drawing all her adult life. While living in Victoria, B.C. during the 1990’s, Burke was introduced to plein air painting and since that time has enjoyed the challenge of painting outdoors in all types of weather; from minus 30 degrees in Bark Lake, Ontario to the muggy high temperatures of southern Ontario. For Burke, studio work is usually a development of outdoor sketches. Over the past 30 years, painting has taken a priority, incorporating it more recently into trips to Cape Cod, Wisconsin, England, Spain, and Portugal. Fifteen years ago, while working at the Stockton Gallery in Markham, Burke sold one of John Pryce’s plein air paintings. Since then, they have enjoyed their common interest in art and painting instruction together.
