CONTRACTOR POSITION AVAILABLE

Artist-Instructor, Aurora Cultural Centre

The Aurora Cultural Centre is seeking a contractor to instruct Saturday art classes for children and youth at the Centre. This contracted position requires artistic skills, hands-on teaching skills, and administrative skills. Reporting to the Education Coordinator, the contracted Artist-Instructor will work on behalf of the Centre to deliver a series of three arts-based programs for children ages 4 – 6, 7 – 10, and 11 – 15 that span over one term consisting of eight sessions. The main area of responsibility for the contracted Artist-Instructor is to develop and deliver a comprehensive art curriculum for each age group based off of the provided age-specific themes. The contracted Artist-Instructor will work in consultation with the Education Coordinator to ensure that a wide range of art techniques and media are used, while also drawing inspiration from key art styles and movements, along with the Centre’s art exhibitions in our on-site galleries. In this capacity, the contracted Artist-Instructor functions as an ambassador for the Aurora Cultural Centre and these long-standing programs.

The contracted Artist-Instructor will be required to work from 8:40AM – 4:20 PM on Saturdays from September 29 – November 24 (skip October 6) with the potential to renew the contract for future terms based on successful performance in the role. He/she will also be compensated for off-site curriculum development based on of a fixed number of agreed upon hours.

This is an independent contractor position with a fixed number of hours as agreed and scheduled. Hourly rate is commensurate with experience. Classes will only run if the minimum number of registrants is met.

Qualifications:

  • B.F.A. or college-level diploma in visual arts and/or B.Ed., or equivalent combination of other education/experience
  • A minimum of two years in-class teaching experience with children, particularly ages 4 – 15
  • Sound understanding of visual arts techniques, styles, and practices
  • Creative thinking and an innovative approach to programming
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Punctuality, flexibility, and problem-solving skills
  • A current police vulnerable sector screening
  • First Aid Certification is an asset
  • Ability to speak other languages is an asset

A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle is also considered a strong asset. The candidate must further be an energetic individual, with an ability to participate in the physical tasks required by the job (some lifting/carrying of art supplies, moving tables and chairs as needed, movement of supplies to various spaces, hanging artwork, and general movement required of hands-on arts instruction).
