Apparitions is an immersive mixed-media installation composed of The Bed, The Attic and The Writing Cabinet. An immersive mixed-media installation examining the idea of “designing for wonder” by exploring the mysterious nature of Britten’s opera The Turn of the Screw. Apparitions is a long term inter-arts project and this exhibition will form its final iteration.
The Bed explores images conjured in the mind of the boy Miles, as he dreamed of toys, a carousel and Quint’s ghost. The viewer is positioned in Miles’ bed facing a large mirror. From there, they observe themselves immersed in nightmarish imagery that is video mapped onto their body. The Writing Cabinet immerses the spectator in an ephemeral space that layers multi-media in a re-purposed antique writing cabinet. Mechanisms are devised to allow the viewer to manipulate video projected onto a pop-up miniature landscape inside this cabinet of wonder. The Attic is envisioned to be experienced through a ceiling hatch leading to a ‘haunted’ attic. A collection of vintage child toys seized from his wards, Miles and Flora, create Quint’s own secret wunderkammer (cabinet of curiosities). The viewer accessed the attic via a ladder creating an immersive experience by revealing a magical video panorama.
Youth Art Workshop Opportunity
A creative opportunity for the youth of Aurora! A two-part workshop plus a mini exhibition opportunity, this workshop provides participants with an overview of Troy Hourie’s creative process as an artist. Students would be introduced to intermedia; the immersion of the body into an active interaction between space, visuals and technology and how this is achieved in Apparitions. Troy Hourie will guide students through his creative methods with a practical experience creating their own intermedial art project. For more details click here.
